WHEN ONE OF THE SLAVES "GOES ROGUE" AND FLEES IN TO THE DEEP WOODS
One of the local free men who has lived there all his life and knows the territory so well can be hired to track it down. Although he is allowed to gun down the escaped slave if necessary, he gets a higher fee if he can return the slave - which is, after all, potentially worth a lot of money - relatively unharmed.
The work is important to the free man as he only has a very small acreage of land himself and it's a struggle to make it pay - and there's always the prospect of enslavement if he cannot pay his taxes! Consequently when he is on a tracking mission he always dresses in a way that displays his body (as much as any free man now does) in the hope of exciting the owner of the slave plantation as he drags the naked slave back, so that the owner will always offer him those assignments.
