On large farms and estates with many, many slaves there can be a problem in keeping track of them. For example, have they all been counted back in to the slave barn at night - it requires expensively paid "free men" to stand there and mark them off the slave register.
It's much easier to have the slaves barcoded as then only a low-level administrator can scan the slaves and the computer can report on any missing. Similarly at the mess hall a quick scan can spot any slave trying to feed twice, or, more sophisticatedly, can prevent the feeding of slaves who are being slimmed down, or who are beeing punished for minor disobedience.
The only problem with barcoding your slaves is the problem of resale value - on the arms, pecs, or even butt can reduce it if you decide to sell the slave, as a potential buyer might be looking for flawless flesh.
The back of the neck, as here, can be a really good position though: it's not visible to a casual inspection, but is easily accessible to the scanner. And if it's to be sold, its hair can be grown to cover it!
