Pete Brown's Slaves

Images and text relating to slavery which appeal to Pete Brown.

Confronting the reality that is chattel slavery.

This picture of a very new slave illustrates most poignantly the horrors of true slavery.

As he staggers from his Master’s home at first light to begin a new day of backbreaking labour under the cruel whips of his overseers, the slave carries with him the degradation, humiliation and shame of spending the night in his new Master’s bed. There, he’d suffered greatly as his Master exercised his owner’s right and “took his cherry”.

The slave thought nothing could be more humiliating than standing naked on the auction-block as free men enthusiastically bid for the right to own him or of the utter degradation of the pre-sale inspections of his young body which preceded the auction.

How wrong the slave was in thinking this!

The previously devout Baptist boy vainly cries out to his Maker for deliverance from his travails! But there will be no help forthcoming. When a free man becomes a slave, he has been abandoned to his fate by whatever gods he once believed in.

Slaves have no heavenly gods: now there are only earthly Masters!
