Is there anything to match the excitement and eroticism of a slave auction - especially if it is held in ancient Rome’s infamous slave-market, the Graeco-stadium? I doubt it very much.
While most slaves are sold in the public area of the Graeco-stadium - and this is where the plebeians or ordinary citizens of Rome buy their slaves - the exotics and more expensive livestock are sold privately as arcana tabulata catastae to Rome’s patricians and ruling elite.
These young princelings are the sons of the chieftains of recently conquered barbarian tribes and as such are considered prime slaves with suitably high prices to match.
Before being marched away into slavery, they were forced to watch the executions, by crucifixion, of their fathers and other tribal elders.
Therefore, they are fully aware that any acts of rebellion on their parts will result in the excruciating pain of the “agony of the cross”.
Their fear of the long, slow, writhing death of crucifixion will ensure that they become docile, obedient and compliant slaves eager to please their new Roman Masters in all things.
